Pros and Cons of Retrofitting DC Servo Systems

  • Pros:
    • Lower cost as you use most of the parts.
    • The machine ends up running as it was originally intended and engineered for.
    • You will not deal with any mechanical coupling issues.
  • Cons:
    • DC servos use brushed motors and require lots of maintenance on brushes, collectors, bearings, dust from the brushes inside the motors etc...  So make sure the motors are in good shape as it may be very frustrating that after undergoing such a project you end up with motors that need to be replaced or upgraded.
    • You will need to learn how to tune a PID on the servo.  This has a whole learning curve all by itself, it is hard to explain.
    • The wiring can be messy and tricky as you are dealing with encoder signals, etc... Especially when compared to AC Servos or Closed-Loop Steppers that come with sealed-factory-made cables.
